Some people leave a mark on a community event… and some people help create the spark that lights the very first flame.

When Light Up Winter began in 2017, it started with a simple idea; to bring people together, brighten the middle of winter, and create a special evening where families, friends and visitors could share in a little bit of magic. Brigitte Tait was one of the passionate locals behind that original vision.

From those early days of planning, problem-solving and dreaming up ways to make Cromwell shine, Brigitte was part of the team that helped shape what has now become one of the region’s much-loved winter traditions.

After many years of dedication to Light Up Winter and the Cromwell & Districts Promotion Group, Brigitte stepped back from the organisation to focus on another passion, growing her own business, The Brae (formerly Scott Base).

Affectionately known by locals as “the place up the hill”, The Brae has become a much-loved Cromwell destination in its own right; a welcoming spot where locals, families and visitors can relax, enjoy delicious wines, craft beers and tasty nibbles, all while soaking in the stunning views across Cromwell and the surrounding landscape.

But as Light Up Winter celebrates its 10th anniversary, it seems only fitting that the story has come full circle…

Brigitte is back…this time behind the scenes supporting the team with logistics and helping bring the event to life once again.

“My passion for the event has always been there and it seems I keep coming back for more” says Brigitte. “It’s pretty special to see how much Light Up Winter has grown and to be able to come back and help in a different way for such a milestone year.”

From those first conversations and early ideas, to thousands of people gathering under the winter sky, Brigitte has seen the event evolve into something far bigger than anyone could have imagined.

And perhaps that’s the true magic of Light Up Winter, it belongs to the community. It is built by people who care, powered by volunteers, and carried forward by those who believe in bringing people together.

Thank you Brigitte for helping light the way from the very beginning  and for returning to help make the 10th anniversary shine brighter than ever.
