Ever wondered what happens to Light Up Winter’s magical lanterns after the event glow fades?
Our dedicated crew of volunteers and staff are on hand to collect lanterns that land in public spaces on the night of the event—and they’re up early the next morning to gather any strays. We’ll even retrieve ones from trees or private properties—just let us know!
Once collected, the lanterns don’t head for landfill. Instead, they’re delivered straight to a team of very hungry locals...

We asked the team at Central Wormworx to tell us more:
Q: Do the worms actually consume the Light Up Winter lanterns?
A: Central Wormworx: Yes. Once collected, the biodegradable paper lanterns are processed by our Tiger Worms. They typically break them down over two to three weeks.
Q: What happens next?
A: Central Wormworx: The worms convert the material into vermicast – a nutrient-rich natural fertiliser. This is then used by gardeners across Central Otago.
Q: Why did you choose to be involved with Light Up Winter?
A: Central Wormworx: The event was a good fit with our focus on sustainability. It provided an opportunity to support community celebration while ensuring waste from the event is repurposed in an environmentally responsible way.
Q: So it contributes to sustainability beyond the event itself?
A: Central Wormworx: That’s right. The process ensures the lanterns are reused in a beneficial way – transforming a temporary display into something that continues to support local gardens.
