A Decade of Winter Magic: Light Up Winter Cromwell To Mark 10 Years with a Spectacular Laser Finale

What started as a simple idea to brighten winter and bring the community together has become one of Central Otago’s most anticipated winter events. On Saturday 1 August, Light Up Winter Cromwell celebrates its 10th anniversary with a spectacular evening of family entertainment, community spirit and a special laser finale.

Over the past decade, the event has grown from a small gathering of locals into a destination event, attracting visitors from across the South Island and even as far afield as Auckland.

That popularity has never been more evident, with this year’s official lanterns selling out in record time; the fastest in the event’s history.

“We’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by the response,” says Tanya Dennis, Marketing, Communications, Sponsorship and Funding Manager for the Cromwell & Districts Promotion Group.

“To see people returning year after year, alongside so many first-time visitors discovering the magic of Light Up Winter, is incredibly rewarding. It’s amazing to think that something which started as a small community event has become such a highlight on the winter calendar.”

Light Up Winter has evolved significantly over the past ten years. Originally held in the Cromwell Mall, it expanded into the adjoining car park, with the lantern release taking place at the Big Fruit Reserve, before moving to its current home at Anderson Park Rose Garden in 2024.

“The Rose Garden offers a beautiful setting, easy access via the many greenways and plenty of space for the event to continue growing while still keeping the community atmosphere that makes Light Up Winter so special,” says Event Organiser Anthea Lawrence.

To celebrate ten magical years, this year’s event will conclude with a spectacular anniversary laser show, following the iconic mass lantern release and adding a dazzling finale to an evening already packed with favourites including the Light Up Your Hat Competition, Thomas the Train rides, live music, illuminated entertainers, street food and signature mulled wine.

Former television personality Matt Chisholm will make his Light Up Winter Cromwell debut as MC, bringing his trademark energy and humour to the milestone celebration. MoreFM Breakfast host Joel Palmer returns to lead the lantern release, while Dee Copeland and the local Barrett Homes team will once again oversee the ever-popular Light Up Your Hat Competition.

Community remains at the heart of the event, which simply would not be possible without the dedication of the volunteers who give their time year after year. The Cromwell Community Board has been a valued supporter of Light Up Winter over the years, with their ongoing commitment helping the event continue to grow and deliver a special celebration for the community.

Returning Principal Partners Aotea Electric Cromwell and Daikin NZ continue to play a leading role in bringing the event to life, with the Aotea Electric Cromwell team once again being hands-on throughout the event, supporting set-up, delivery and operations on the night. They are joined by a growing number of valued local businesses, funders and community partners whose generosity and involvement help make this much-loved celebration possible.

Adding to this year’s celebrations is the new Light Up Your Letterbox competition, encouraging residents throughout the Cromwell Ward to brighten their neighbourhoods in the lead-up to the event.

“Light Up Winter has always been about bringing people together,” says Tanya Dennis. “Whether you’re decorating your letterbox in the lead-up to the event, wearing a glowing hat, volunteering behind the scenes or simply enjoying the atmosphere, everyone plays a part in creating something special. “We’re incredibly proud to be celebrating ten magical years and can’t wait to welcome everyone to Anderson Park Rose Garden on Saturday 1 August.”

Light Up Winter Cromwell takes place on Saturday 1st August at the Anderson Park Rose Garden, with entry by voluntary gold coin donation.
